April 29, 2020 - Mental Health Learning Opportunities

Northern Lights Public Schools and the Successful Families, Successful Kids project are pleased to share the first of our weekly updates focusing on parent learning opportunities and resources to support Mental Health.

We have five things that we plan to share with you every week:

Parent Presentations

Our Wellness Coaches have recorded some of the presentations they offer to parents at our schools throughout the year, focusing on a variety of Mental Health topics. Each one is approximately 30 minutes long. The presentations will be available at the link(s) provided for two weeks.

This week’s videos are:
Vaping: It’s Not Harmless Part 1

Vaping: It’s Not Harmless Part 2

They will be available for viewing from today (Wednesday, April 29) until Wednesday, May 13, 2020.

quaranTEAM Connect

Our Wellness Coaches have developed a series of videos for families to watch together. Each video includes fun activities that promote mental wellness and connection.

This week’s quaranTEAM Connect was created by Melanie Fersovitch, our SFSK Wellness Coach from the Bonnyville area. Click HERE to watch and enjoy!

This video will be available for viewing from today (Wednesday, April 29) until Wednesday, May 13, 2020.

Mindful Minutes

Follow us on Facebook and Instagram @nlpsab to see a Mindful Minute each Wednesday presented by one of our SFSK Wellness Coaches. Each Mindful Minute focuses on a different mindfulness technique to share with your families!

Mental Health Links and Resources

Each week we will be sharing links to resources. Some will align with the week’s Parent Presentation or QuaranTEAM Connects videos. Others may focus on a different Mental Health topic. We will also be sharing printable resources created by our Mental Health team.

Here are this week’s links and resources:

  • Our Check-In Chart was developed by our Successful Families, Successful Kids project. It includes questions to help you or your child examine how you are feeling, as well as techniques to help calm or energize you.

  • Our Weekly Wellness Schedule was also developed by our Successful Families, Successful Kids project. It can help you structure your day while incorporating mindfulness, physical activity and gratitude.

  • Building Resilient Families by Promoting Positive Mental and Physical Health is a document developed by AHS - Central Zone Addiction Prevention and Mental Health Promotion to support families to build their resilience by learning ways to promote positive mental and physical health. The resource includes encouragement to create a healthy routine and simple, creative ways to Move Your Body, Practice Mindfulness, Expand Your Mind, and Fuel Your Body. It also includes resources to help parents talk to their children about COVID-19 and where to go for information and support.

Watch your email every Wednesday for our Mental Health Learning Opportunities Update. If there are topics you would like us to cover, we would love to hear about it! Please fill out our Mental Health Session Survey.
