Our scholarship pages focus on scholarships that are local or regional in nature that might not appear in Internet searches or in databases. While we do include some provincial and national scholarships, it is not an extensive list. There are many databases and websites that students and parents can use to find more scholarships and bursaries that are available:

Eligibility

A student must have a minimum combined average based on five designated courses in at least one grade. Grade 10, 11 or 12 as calculated from:

  • Alberta Residents
    Courses/marks on an official Alberta Transcript of High School Achievement

  • Completed High School Outside Alberta
    Courses/marks that appear on an official high school transcript attained in another province

Students will automatically be considered for the following awards when they apply for the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship. There is no separate application required for these awards.

Audience

Students in grades 6, 9 and 11

Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) and endorsed by the office of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta.

Eligibility

These awards will consider Alberta student nominees who attend a school in Alberta that is operated by an ASBA member school board. Students will be nominated by school staff or a member of the education community based on their academic achievement, attitudes, actions and characteristics in pursuit of their educational path.

Nominees must demonstrate the following attitudes, actions and characteristics:

  • A significant level of academic improvement;
  • Consistently responsible, caring and respectful actions;
  • Perseverance in the pursuit of school achievement;
  • Improvement in work ethic, attitude, attendance and interactions with others;
  • Modelling leadership that inspires their peers;
  • Maintains strength, self-care and a positive attitude in pursuit of their personal path to education and
    life goals;
  • And, kindness towards others.

Applicant must be enrolled in an American or Canadian post secondary educational institution.  Applicant must submit an essay of less than 500 words about where they see the future of the energy industry.

Audience

Children of co-operative members of gas utilities within the Federation of Alberta Gas Co-ops, as well as, children or landowners who are serviced by gas member towns, villages, counties, or bands.

Eligibility

Candidates must have completed the course work of the last one (1) year of schooling required for admission to the post secondary institution and must have obtained an academic standing of at least seventy five percent (75%) in core subjects.

Preference will be given to those applicants entering a field of study which applies to either the
Natural Gas Industry (e.g. Power Engineering, Millwrights, Gas Utility Operators, Machinists,
Heavy Equipment Technician, and Steamfitter/Pipefitter etc.) or to Rural-Based programs.

Each year the John Hasselefield Endowment Foundation helps Alberta students pursue their passions by awarding scholarships to public school students. This non-profit society was created to provide support to “young people who display a wanting desire for personal development and learning through education, sports, music and physical activity, who might otherwise not fulfill that desire because life has put obstacles in their path in ways beyond their control.”

The scholarship will be open to students enrolled full-time post-secondary study in a diploma or degree and students will be eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship for accepting a summer position at UFA, in Alberta or Saskatchewan.

Loran Award
