Seven Teachings Award Recipients

The NLPS Seven Teachings Award is presented annually to First Nations, Metis and Inuit students who demonstrate dedication in pursuit of their educational path, rooted in cultural pride and growth, by demonstrating one or more of the following:

  • Truth, love, respect, courage, humility, wisdom, and honesty;
  • Perseverance in pursuit of their goals;
  • Embracing their cultural identity and promoting the strength, beauty and value of their culture and community;
  • Modelling leadership through a cultural lens that inspires other to pursue their goals;
  • Consistency and/or growth in work ethic, attitude, and interaction with others.

2025 Recipients

In 2025, the NLPS Board of Trustees presented seven students with Seven Teachings Awards.

Jaera Anderson - Ecole Plamondon School

Jaera celebrates and shares her Métis culture with pride and grace. A talented powwow dancer, she performs at school and cultural events, helping peers understand the meaning behind each movement and piece of regalia. She designs and sews her own ribbon skirts—often creating them for others as well—and brings a cultural lens to classroom discussions. Through her mentorship in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and her gentle leadership style, Jaera fosters inclusivity and encourages others to embrace their identities.

Keeryn Anderson - Aurora Middle School

Keeryn embraces her cultural identity with pride and shares it joyfully with those around her. A competitive Fancy Shawl dancer, she participates in Powwows and Round Dances that honour the traditions of her community. In the classroom, Keeryn is a dedicated learner who brings a positive attitude and strong work ethic, modelling perseverance, wisdom, and respect for others.

Kaylan Lavallee - J.A. Williams High School

Kaylan exemplifies truth, love, respect, courage, humility, wisdom, and honesty in every space she enters. She takes pride in her cultural heritage and shares it openly through storytelling, smudging circles, and community involvement. With a quiet strength and nurturing spirit, Kaylan uplifts others and leads with purpose. She holds herself to high standards, approaches challenges with curiosity, and encourages others to pursue their goals while staying rooted in who they are.

Pyper Ray - Aurora Middle School

Pyper leads with respect, dedication, and integrity in everything she does—academics, athletics, and extracurriculars. She is committed to preserving her culture, participating actively in her Cree class and proudly embracing traditional practices such as smudging and jigging. As both a team player and a mentor, Pyper inspires those around her to pursue excellence while staying true to who they are.

Carter Suhan - Aurora Middle School

Carter demonstrates the Seven Teachings through his positive attitude, perseverance, and contributions to both his school and community. Whether sharing his passion for fishing or participating in outdoor education, Carter encourages others to do their best and leads by example. He actively engages in Cree language and cultural learning, showing curiosity, humility, and a strong desire to grow.

Marisa Thistle - Cold Lake High School

Marisa, a proud Denesuline student from Cold Lake First Nation, embodies cultural pride and perseverance. A descendant of Chief Kinosayoo, she honours her family’s legacy through traditional practices such as smudging, caribou hair tufting, and porcupine quillwork. She is learning the Dene language and working to preserve her community’s oral traditions. Marisa is breaking intergenerational barriers by earning her diploma and showing other Indigenous students the power of strength, identity, and resilience.

Markelle Whitford-Bull - Aurora Middle School

Markelle shines as a cultural ambassador and community builder. She shares her Indigenous knowledge freely—dancing at ceremonial events, promoting inclusivity, and learning alongside others. Whether helping clean up after lunch, greeting guests with a smile, or offering a helping hand, Markelle uplifts her school with kindness, humility, and empathy, truly living the Seven Teachings every day.
