Election in Ward 1- Bonnyville Area

An election will be held in Ward 1 - Bonnyville Area. There are three trustee positions available and five candidates:

  • Cheryl Edwards
  • Lorena Hagen
  • Mark Hunt
  • Garry Kissel
  • Roy Ripkens.

Election day is Monday, October 20, 2025.

Voting at Advanced Polls

NLPS is co-ordinating its election in Ward 1 - Bonnyville Area with the ones being held for municipal council. Voters can vote for their trustee(s) at the same time they cast their ballot for municipal council.

Nomination Update

September 24, 2025

One nomination was received for the open trustee position in Ward 4 - Lac La Biche-Plamondon-North. The nomination period has now closed and Sandy Makokis has been acclaimed for the 2025-2029 term. 

September 23, 2025

Nominations remain open in Ward 4 - Lac La Biche - Plamondon-North. No nominations were received today during the extended nomination period so they will be open again on Wednesday, September 24 between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at the NLPS division office in Bonnyville. If no nominations are received, nominations will re-open on Thursday at the same time.

An election will be held in Ward 1 - Bonnyville and Area. There are three trustee positions available and five candidates: Cheryl Edwards, Lorena Hagen, Mark Hunt, Garry Kissel and Roy Ripkens. The election will be held on October 20th.

September 22, 2025

The nomination period has been extended in one ward, trustees have been acclaimed in three wards, and there will likely be an election in one ward following the close of the nomination period at noon today (Monday, September 22, 2025).

Nominations extended in Ward 4 - Lac La Biche-Plamondon North

No nominations were received in Ward 4 - Lac La Biche-Plamondon-North. As a result, nominations will open again tomorrow - Tuesday, September 23 between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. If no nominations are received tomorrow, nominations will re-open the following day during the same time. This process will continue daily until a candidate comes forward or six days has passed, whichever comes first. 

Ward 1 nominees

In Ward 1 - Bonnyville, five candidates submitted nomination forms for the three trustee positions that are available. Those candidates are: Cheryl Edwards, Lorena Hagen, Mark Hunt, Garry Kissel, and Roy Ripkens. The nominations are unofficial until a 24-hour period has passed. During that time, candidates may withdraw their names from contention if they wish to do so. Once that 24-hour period has expired, the nominations will be considered official and arrangements will be made for the election on Monday, October 20 if necessary.

Trustees acclaimed in Wards 2, 3 & 5

In Ward 2 - Cold Lake, there were three nominations submitted for the three positions that were available. As a result, Karen Packard, Mandi Skogen and Ron Young have been acclaimed to those positions and will serve as trustees for the 2025-2029 term.

In Ward 3 - Lac La Biche, one nomination was received for the one open position. As a result, Lois Phillips was acclaimed and will serve as a trustee for the 2025-2029 term.

In Ward 5 - Lac La Biche South, one nomination was received for the one open position. As a result, James White was acclaimed and will serve as a trustee for the 2025-2029 term.

Electoral Wards

The Northern Lights Public Schools (NLPS) Board of Trustees consists of nine trustees from 5 wards:

  • Ward 1 - Bonnyville and Area - 3 trustees
  • Ward 2 - Cold Lake and Area - 3 trustees
  • Ward 3 - Lac La Biche - 1 trustee
  • Ward 4 - Lac La Biche - Plamondon - North - 1 trustee
  • Ward 5 - Lac La Biche South - 1 trustee

What Ward do I belong to?

The Northern Lights School Division  electoral wards were created in 1995 when the Lakeland Public School District and Lac La Biche School District were amalgamated. they were recently updated to include the Cold Lake Air Weapons range (ID 349), which has been added to Ward 4.
