AP 460: Extracurricular Day In Lieu

Background

The Division values staff who volunteer their time in order to supervise extracurricular activities to the benefit of students of Northern Lights Public Schools. In recognition of the efforts of staff who provide extracurricular activities outside of instructional time, any staff member who provides two hundred (200) or more hours of pre-approved extracurricular supervision per school year shall receive one (1) paid release day in recognition of their volunteerism in NLPS schools.

Procedures

  1. Extracurricular activities must work directly with NLPS students and occur outside the normal hours of instruction for which a staff member is not receiving remuneration. Due to the voluntary nature of extracurricular activities the hours volunteered by teachers cannot be counted as assignable time.
  2. Examples of extracurricular activities include but are not limited to coaching or supervising school sports teams, supervising after school clubs, or directing a non-instructional drama production. Extracurricular activities are those that are pre-approved by the Superintendent or designate.
  3. The paid release day must be used within the school year the hours are earned. Hours will not be bankable from one year to the next. Paid release days will not be paid out if not utilized. Maximum of one (1) paid release day per school year.
  4. To access the paid release day, and upon the completion of the two hundred (200) volunteer hours, staff must complete and submit the Extracurricular Hours Form (F-460-1) to their school principal for signed approval. Upon approval the staff member will enter their requested absence in the system as per NLPS absence procedures by choosing the Extracurricular Day in Lieu absence code. The entered absence will require approval in the system by the principal prior to dispatch for sub booking purposes. The signed Extracurricular Hours Form (F-460-1) must then be forwarded by the principal to the Human Resources department for filing purposes. The form can be accessed on the NLPS Staff Connect site.
  5. Any questions regarding the paid release day, including which extracurricular activities are pre-approved, should be forwarded to the Director of People Services in the Human Resources Department.
