AP 553: Division Bus or Vehicle Operation
Background
In the interest of safety with respect to the transportation of students for school activities, the Superintendent expects school-administration approved drivers to meet or exceed standards described in Provincial Statutes.
The parent is the primary decision-maker in matters affecting individual students; that is, parents must ultimately decide whether or not they will send their child(ren) on a field trip or excursion by bus or other method of transport.
Procedures
- For school activities involving students, every school-based administrator approved driver, whether staff member or volunteer, who operates a AR 317/2002 school or commercial bus with a seating capacity exceeding 24 passengers must meet the following criteria:
- Be in possession of a valid Class I or Class II Alberta Operator's License.
- Complete the School Bus Driver Improvement Program (S Course).
- For school activities involving students, every school-based administrator approved driver, whether staff member or volunteer, who operates a Commercial bus with a seating capacity under 24 passengers must be in possession of a valid Class IV Alberta Operator's License with the S endorsement.
- For school activities involving students, every school-based administrator approved driver, whether staff member or volunteer, who operates a division vehicle must be in possession of a valid Class IV Alberta Operator's License.
- For school activities exceeding 160 kilometers radius, regardless of age group or size of bus/vehicle, the driver shall not act in the dual capacity of supervisor and driver, regardless of type of vehicle.
- For school activities involving students, regardless of age group or distance travelled, travelling on buses with a seating capacity exceeding 24 passengers, the driver shall not act in the dual capacity of supervisor and driver.
- For school activities involving students travelling by car, truck, or van, the driver, whether staff member or volunteer, must be approved by school-administration.
