Suicide Prevention Day Resources

September 10 is Suicide Prevention Day, a day to raise awareness around the globe that suicide can be prevented.

Northern Lights Public Schools is committed to improving the mental health and wellness of our students, and we want to make sure that our students, parents, and staff all feel that they are part of a safe and caring school division. 

There are many resources available to people, young and old, struggling with thoughts of suicide and self-harm. 

Kids Help Phone - 1-800-668-6868

Kids Help Phone has a large number of resources aimed to help students cope with thoughts of suicide, improve their mental health, and help friends who may be struggling with depression or anxiety. They also have 24-hour text, call, and chat support.

 

Alberta Mental Health Crisis Line - 1-877-303-2642

Provides toll-free, 24/7 confidential, anonymous service, crisis intervention, information about mental health programs and services, and referrals to other agencies if needed.

 

Apps for Resilience, Mental Health Promotion & Suicide Prevention

Dr. Sally Spencer Thomas (clinical psychologist, inspirational international speaker) has compiled a list of mobile apps  that help to promote and increase positive mental health


The Mental Health Commission of Canada

The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC), in collaboration with the Centre for Suicide Prevention, the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention, and the Public Health Agency of Canada has developed 2 toolkits to support people who have been impacted by suicide. One toolkit is tailored for people who have attempted suicide , and the other is focused on resources for people who have lost someone to suicide

NASP (National Association of School Psychologists)

NASP has a variety of resources specifically for parents and teachers to help prevent youth suicide and self-harm.
