Kindergarten students at Cold Lake Elementary School have had extra guidance and support as they adjust to school routines this fall, thanks to the Grade 3 Peace Patrol.
Members of the Peace Patrol volunteer their time as mentors and helpers throughout the school day. They assist with the school’s Breakfast Club, help younger students at lunchtime, supervise students outside, and make sure all students can find help when needed.
“I like seeing everyone’s happy faces,” said Spencer, explaining the Peace Patrol helps students who need help with everything from cleaning up toys to opening packages at lunch.
“We teach the Kinders stuff they are supposed to do,” added Owen.
“We supervise people and when they are helping somebody, we give them a sticker,” explained Emery.
Kindergarten teachers say the Peace Patrol has made a huge difference, especially in helping the youngest students settle into routines and eat their lunch.
“They are amazing role models for our kinders,” said Kindergarten teacher Jana Nakonechny. “We couldn’t have gotten through September without them.”
Assistant Principal Twila Moore said many Grade 3 students arrive at school early, eager to put on their special Peace Patrol vests and begin their work for the day.
“They approach each responsibility with enthusiasm and care, demonstrating kindness, responsibility, and a strong commitment to creating a safe and welcoming school environment,” she noted. “As a staff, we couldn’t be more proud of the leadership and example they are setting for our school community.”
For their leadership and positive impact, the Grade 3 Peace Patrol at Cold Lake Elementary School has been named Northern Lights Public Schools’ Student Shining Stars for October. Each month during the 2025-2026 school year, NLPS is recognizing students who go above and beyond to make their schools better places to learn and grow.
